Fitbit

Hi guys, Jeff Ford here! We’re really excited about all the additions we’ve made to the coaching program this year! The one thing that has me the most excited is adding Fitbit to the program. Fitbit is a great, not to mention EASY, tool for accurately calculating your daily activities. We’ll be taking advantage of all the benefits the Fitbit site offers including a private group where we can all talk to one another! Although it is not necessary to purchase the actual Fitbit monitor to access the Fitbit site and participate in the group discussions, there are several advantages to using this daily tracker. Read the information below to learn more about Fitbit and to get started!

What is FitBit?

The Fitbit is an electronic accelerometer that clips onto clothing and tracks calories burned, steps, distance and sleep quality. Using a 3D motion sensor, this information is wirelessly uploaded to Fitbit.com, where users can track activity levels, set goals, log food intake and compete with other users.

How does it work?

Fitbit is free to sign up. Users do not have to own the actual Fitbit device to start logging their food or exercise, but using a Fitbit allows individuals the chance to instantly update their steps and all daily activities. If you would like to purchase a device or would like to learn more about it, please visit the Fitbit product website by clicking the banner on the right.

What are the benefits?

  1. Accurate and easy to use device that automatically collects and uploads data to your personal Fitbit Website.
  2. Tracks your exercise intensity levels, calories burned, sleep quality, steps and distance.
  3. Easy to conceal and wearable on your waist, pockets or on undergarments.
  4. Join groups to share progress with others and encourage each other towards a common goal
  5. Ability to log nutrition, weight and other details to get a complete picture of your health

Creating a Fitbit log in

Go to www.fitbit.com. Click the “sign up” button in the upper right hand corner of the page. This will direct you to the Fitbit sign-in page where you can register using your unique email address and password.

Make sure that you unclick the checked box unless you are interested in receiving periodic messages from Fitbit.

Setting up your Fitbit account

Once you have created your Fitbit account, you will be directed to a page where you will be asked to input your body information (this will allow you to receive more tailored and accurate results). Please answer all of the questions and submit the information. At this point, you will be directed to your personal Fitbit Dashboard.

Setting up my caloric range

Find the Food Goal section under your dashboard. Click the link that reads “Create a food goal to help you reach your goal”. This will allow you to enter your current weight and goal weight. Make sure that you update this section as you lose weight! Click “next” and Fitbit will create a customized caloric range for you. To set your own range, click “Create my own calorie target” at the bottom of the screen. (Use the ranges that Hilton Head Health has recommended for you). Enter in your calorie target and click “save”.

Accessing the H3@Home Group Page

Once you have your login set up, simply click and follow this link http://www.fitbit.com/group/229CC8. It will then take you to the H3@Home group page on the Fitbit site. Click “join this group”.
