After a courageous battle with cancer, Devin Sheaffer, a beloved colleague to all at Hilton Head Health (H3) and dear friend to many, passed away on August 26th, 2010. As a massage therapist at H3, Devin’s compassion for our Guests and dedication to his work was clear in everything he said and did. One Guest put it best when she said, “I didn’t know whether to schedule a massage with Devin for the massage itself or to just spend time with him.” He was the type of person who had the ability to connect and befriend anyone he met. He will truly be missed but never forgotten.

In honor and loving memory of Devin, H3 will be hosting its second annual Devin’s Dash Memorial 5K through the scenic paths of Shipyard Plantation on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at 8 a.m. The 5K run/walk will begin and end at Hilton Head Healthlocated at 14 Valencia Road, Hilton Head, S.C. 29928. The race is open to all runners, walkers and stroller drivers. After the event, there will be a poolside party where we’ll offer post-race snacks and smoothies, announce the race winners and raffle off prizes. Event proceeds will send local boys and girls with cancer through the RET Foundation to an overnight kids camp called Happiness Is Camping, where they will spend a week enjoying what it means to be a kid.

Memorial 5K Walk/Run: September 22, 2012

We pride ourselves on honoring the memory of Devin Sheaffer by giving you an extraordinary 5K experience. From first-timers to elites, our participants are our top priority. The 3.1 mile Dash is filled with supportive volunteers, cheering spectators and allows an opportunity to meet new and inspiring people all gathered to celebrate the pure energy of Devin’s Life.

Happiness is Camping

Happiness Is Camping, for children with cancer, was founded in 1980. About 400 children, girls and boys aged 6-15 years, attend the overnight camp, staying from one to all of the sessions, depending on their health.

The camp is free to all, supported by donations and volunteer staff members. The medical staff, doctors and nurses, from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Montefiore and other fine facilities; provide medical supervision of the highest quality, with facilities for kids requiring chemotherapy, children at risk of bleeding and infection or with significant physical disabilities.

Happiness Is Camping is a special place where the remarkable is routine. We’re a regular sleep-away camp for normal kids; girls and boys who just happen to have cancer.

To make the biggest impact locally, Devin’s Dash benefits two organizations. Through the RET Foundation, we’ll be selecting children affected by Pediatric Cancer to send on an all-expenses paid trip to Happiness is Camping, a free summer camp for children with cancer. For every $2,000 raised, we’ll have the opportunity to send one child to camp free of expenses.

The RET Foundation aims to help pediatric cancer patients and their families.

In 1999, shortly before his 14th birthday, Ret Thomas was diagnosed with a relatively rare and virulent form of pediatric cancer known as Ewing’s Sarcoma. Following a year-long battle, he died in April 2000.

To honor Ret’s courage and determination, and to give life to his desire to make something positive come from his struggle with cancer, his family has established the RET (Richard E. Thomas III) Pediatric Cancer Foundation.

2011 Recap

It was a beautiful Hilton Head morning as 175 registered runners lined up to kick off the 2^nd annual Devin’s Dash memorial 5K. The crowed contained former and current Hilton Head Health guests and staff, local runners, members of Devin’s family, and visitors to the island. The atmosphere was full of excitement and Pure Energy as the runners made their way through Shipyard plantation. All around there was encouragement and determination as participants pushed toward their goal of crossing the finish line in front of Hilton Head Health.

And at the finish line there were smoothies, muffins and raffle prizes waiting! Participants celebrated their achievement, some who had never participated in a 5K before! It was a great morning and event which benefited the American Cancer Society. After the raffle prizes were handed out and the party was winding down, a check was presented to ACS for $5,000!! Thanks to all of the awesome runners and enthusiastic volunteers for making this event a huge success. A good time was had by all and Devin’s memory was celebrated with Pure Energy!
