From an Intern’s Perspective: You’ll never believe what H3 guests love to do

hip hop silhouette 2 From an Intern’s Perspective: You’ll never believe what H3 guests love to doWhen the other interns and I first arrived to H3, Wii Sport was a new class being offered as a fitness option. If you have never played on a Wii before, it is a gaming system by Nintendo that doesn’t require your typical joint-stick remote, but requires a wireless remote that moves according to your movement.  It usually comes with Wii Sport, which can be a really fun game but gets a little boring after awhile. The interns and I decided H3 needed a game that would keep people interested for the whole hour time period, get people moving, and get people excited… that’s when we decided to purchase Just Dance.

Just Dance is a game in which players learn (follow along to) dance moves to popular songs. There is a wide range of music from the 80’s and 90’s featured on the game. It only took one class before word spread the Wii Dance was a must attend fitness class. After dancing to all the songs on Just Dance about 4 to 5 times, a guest graciously donated Just Dance 2, which features even more songs and an even wider variety of music. Just Dance 2 has songs such as “It’s Raining Men” by Weather Girls (which I saw Adam dance to a few times…hehe), “Tik Tok” by Ke$ha, and another guest favorite, “Proud Mary” by Tina Turner. But the song that took the cake, the all time guest favorite was none other than “Jump” by Kris Kross!!

Friday Fitness: Grab Your Bike & Go!

In training for my upcoming triathlon (next weekend!), I’ve found that I truly enjoy the sport of biking – especially time of year.  With more than 80 miles of trails and 12 miles of flat beaches, Hilton Head Island is the perfect place to enjoy the outdoors—and go for a bike ride.

As the spring weather is finally upon us, I challenge you to pull your bike out of the garage (if you haven’t already), lace up your sneakers and go for a bike ride! If biking is already a part of your fitness routine, spice it up by trying one of these ideas:

  • Create your own SPIN session by using one of our H3Daily interval workouts on your bike
  • Grab some friends and go on a nature bike tour—it’s a great opportunity to learn even more about where you live
  • If possible, bike to work—it’s not only a great built-in workout at the beginning and end of your day, but it’s good for the environment

Jeff Ford and Kelly Hillyer manning the H3 table at Relay For Life

Jeff Ford and Kelly Hillyer manning the H3 table at Relay For Life

Yesterday, Hilton Head Health stopped by the Relay For Life event at Honey Horn. It was so moving to see so many people and businesses dedicating their time and resources for a such great cause. Relay For Life benefits the American Cancer Society, and as many of you know through your participation in our Devin’s Dash Memorial 5K, Hilton Head Health is also a supporter of the American Cancer Society. During the event, H3 handed out registration forms for Devin’s Dash, walked around meeting cancer survivors and their caretakers, and performed our Sun Salutation routine. This was my first volunteer event on Hilton Head Island and it surely will not be my last.

Now that I am an official resident of the island, I have been inspired to start getting more involved. There are so many benefits to volunteering in your community. Not only do you get to meet people and feel a since of pride in knowing that you’re doing something good, volunteering could also be great form of exercise. Try contacting your local Boys and Girls Club and volunteer to shoot some hoops or even host a field day. I’m planning to accompany Jeff Ford and Amber Shadwick when they visit the Hilton Head chapter of Boys and Girls Club to do a little cardio boxing with the kids. Registering for races is another great way to support the community while also incorporating fitness into your volunteerism. There are many online sites like www.active.com, that make it easy for you to find a race near you. So now that the weather’s nice, there are no excuses! Get out and volunteer! You may find that you will get a whole lot out of giving.

Real People, Real Stories: Breaking the Cycle

Mark Zigman_guest bloggerSo here it is! My first H3 blog! I am so excited to be able to be a part of this community and be able to share my motivations, thoughts & ideas, struggles, triumphs, etc. I’m also hoping to be able to help open up discussions between H3 guests (past, present, and future), H3 staff, and myself. You know – the entire H3 family! Real informative topics from those of us on the same journey. Although I love all the groups and friends we all have in common on social media sites, such as Facebook, that really isn’t the arena for the tougher or more personal topics.

The H3 Daily blog is already here for us and has successfully started to facilitate and distribute great information. But without US contributing, the current bloggers may never really know what topics we would like to talk about. So I urge you fellow alumni to please join in! Please comment and post! Please volunteer as guest bloggers! Let’s keep this community active! We are all in this together! The support and energy we see when at H3 can and should continue when we depart! This is the right place! And in my personal journey, it’s never been a better time!!

Well it kind of hit me when I read my little bio because it made me realize something – It said I was down 90 pounds since my first visit in 2005. Although that’s entirely true, what’s missing is the in between. I came in July of 2005 and between then and the Holidays had lost 80 pounds. Very exciting! Then, by July 2008 I had gained it all back and returned to H3. Again, same thing! By the Holidays I had lost 85 pounds! I felt fantastic! However, by October of 2010 was I back to the original weight again. So for the accountants and math experts reading this, I’m down 255 pounds since my first visit in 2005 and up 165 along the way for the net of 90 pounds down.

What is this cycle?  That’s the million-dollar question for sure! And one I believe we all face. So the good news is I’m on the down side again, 90 pounds since October! And the even better news is I’m feeling much better about this entire process this time! What’s different? Well that’s exactly what I would like to share with you here on these blog entries, but ask you for your input and conversation as well.

Personally I have focused on a few of what I’ll call key success factors. Each of my blogs will talk about these observations and what I am doing to adhere to them.  These are as follows and in no particular order:

Planning – As we all learned at H3, planning for carrying on your program at home is definitely a key to obtaining your goals.

Seeking and Providing Support – This is the common thing we all are facing. It is different for each of us (well we think it is different for each of us) and in my case I thought that no one could understand. Once I started sharing and listening to others, low and behold, we are all trying to say the same underlying thing. The events or circumstances are different, but the core issue seems to be the same! All or Nothing! Why?

Recording and Measurement – Journal, Journal, Journal. Writing down everything has be a huge part of what I’m doing differently this time.  Good news is that I’m a techie. So I’m here to help you all out with this! I’ll share with you how I’m keeping track of all this data. Send me your questions!

Research – Information is everywhere. Find it! In fact, if you’re reading this, you are already at an amazing site for information. H3daily.com is a great place to start. In upcoming posts, I’m hoping to be able to share what I find and ask that each of you contribute! This is our blog – our space. Let’s use it!

Relaxation – The key here is to find what works for you, but listen to your body on those days where it’s extra sore.  Since thinking through this, my injuries have all but disappeared and my progress has never been better. Oh and I’m not talking about soreness. That will always be there! Thoughts?

Check back next week as I look forward to diving deeper into each of the above topics.  I know they are the key to what keep me going every day.  I hope to hear from you all very soon – and please don’t wait for me, go ahead and run with them…let’s discuss!

~ Mark

Top 8 Hilton Head Health Moments of 2010

Here are eight of the many amazing moments in 2010.  What were your top H3 moments of 2010?  Relive your experience in the comments section!

Yoga Retreat

8.  Yoga Retreat – On May 15th, 2010 we completed our first ever yoga retreat with Karen Verechia.  It was an enormous success!  The three magnificent days were spent practicing various styles of yoga in some of the most beautiful and tranquil places on Hilton Head Island including: White Point on Pinckney Island, Lake Joe in the Sea Pines Forest Preserve, and a barren tidal island in the middle of the May River.

7.  The Return of Jeff and Jen – Jeff Ford and Jen Welper both returned to Hilton Head Health in 2010.  Jeff, previously a program intern in the fall of 2009, became a full-time fitness specialist in May 2010.  It was a no brainer to invite Jeff back to H3 after how well received he had been the previous fall.  His passion for Health and Fitness is infectious!  Jen Welper left Hilton Head Health en route to Chicago in 2008, but realized that H3 was her home away from home.  So, in 2010 when the position of executive chef reopened, Jen Welper was the obvious shoe-in.  Both Jeff and Jen added a tremendous amount of experience and enthusiasm to an already incredible H3 team.

Hilton Head Health

6.  New Pool and Front Entrance – In the early spring of 2010 we opened a brand new state-of-the-art swimming pool.  The geothermal heating system combined with mineral filtration and zero degree entry was the first pool of its kind on Hilton Head Island.  The nearly 25-meter pool’s rectangular shape gave H3 the ability to start teaching a variety of new classes.  Oh and let’s not forget the new Hot Tub that had been a desire of repeat guests for years.  About two months later we finished the world class front entrance, fountain and sitting area.

5.  H3 Direct and Our First Corporate Wellness Client – The Zeigler Group, an auto dealer in the Grand Rapids/Kalamazoo area of Michigan, became our first ever corporate wellness client.  The owner, Harold Zeigler, and his son visited H3 and wanted a way to start implementing the healthy tactics in their workplace.  They enlisted the help of H3 by bringing the experts to their employees.  Bob Wright and I each gave two days of lectures to hundreds of their motivated employees.  Soon they were dropping pounds and getting fit.  H3 Direct was born and interest in the now nationwide program blossomed.

4.  Two Brand-Spanking-New Sister Websites, H3Daily.com and HHHealth.com – If you’ve been reading H3Daily.com for a while you know that it’s gone through a major overhaul as well as an overall improvement in content.  Video, recipes, workouts and articles are now published daily, keeping our guests and their network of friends and family well-informed and motivated.  Then, four weeks ago we unveiled the new flagship HHHealth.com website.  Its combination of strategic organization, design, improved photo content and revamped testimonials page have given potential guests a true representation of what Hilton Head Health is all about.

3.  Wellness Coaching – All six of H3’s Health Specialist’s spent 13 weeks in an intensive wellness coach training program developed by a world-renowned Harvard professor and accredited by the Gold-Standard organization in health and fitness, the ACSM.  The program has improved our in-house individual coaching sessions that every new guest receives, but has also spawned an entire new sector of lifestyle advancement that H3 we’ll be fully unveiling in 2011.  The program includes phone coaching for departing guests that’s expected to drastically improve their opportunity for long-term success.

2.  The Filming of the Upcoming HEAVY Documentary for A&E – If you were here this past summer you likely had the opportunity to meet twelve incredible individuals that spent six months at H3 transforming their lives.  Fortunately, for those of you that didn’t get to meet the gang, the entire transformation was captured by Tijuana Entertainment and is set to air throughout the next 3 months starting January 17th, 2010 at 10 pm on A&E.

Devins Dash

1.  Devin’s Dash 5k – In 2010 we lost our beloved massage therapist Devin Schaffer to cancer.  But, his battle brought hundreds of family and friends together on Saturday, October 16th, 2010 in a day that can only be described as divine.  His presence was certainly felt along the 3.1 mile running route in Shipyard Plantation.  The turnout was astounding and the over $10,000 raised for the American Cancer Society was a testament to the impact that Devin had on so many lives.  There is no question that the top moment of 2010 at Hilton Head Health was the race in honor of such a beautiful individual.

Come join us for a morning of PURE ENERGY

Devin Dash 5K

Devin was someone who could brighten a room with his smile, lift your spirits with his optimism and heal your aches with the touch of his hands.

After a courageous battle with cancer, Devin Sheaffer, a beloved colleague to all at Hilton Head Health (H3) and dear friend to many, passed away on August 26th, 2010. As a massage therapist here at H3, Devin’s compassion for our Guests and dedication to his work was clear in everything he said and did. One Guest put it best when she said, “I didn’t know whether to schedule a massage with Devin for the massage itself or to just spend time with him.” He was the type of person who had the ability to connect and befriend anyone he met. He will truly be missed but never forgotten.

In honor and loving memory of Devin, H3 will be hosting a 5K Run/Walk through the scenic paths of Shipyard Plantation on Saturday, October 16th at 8am. We welcome all Guests, along with the general public, to come out and join us as we celebrate Devin’s life.

After the event, there will be a poolside party where we’ll offer post-race snacks and smoothies, announce the race winners, and raffle off prizes. Raffle prizes include a bicycle provided by the Bike Doctor, a tennis racquet provided by Van Der Meer Tennis and an H3 Day Pass—just to name a few! All event proceeds will benefit the American Cancer society in Lasting Memory of Devin Scheaffer.

Don’t get a flag thrown on your Super Bowl Party

Chances are this Sunday, while cheering your team to victory you will probably indulge in a few extra calories.  Instead of making the ‘unwise’ choices – turn your celebration into a ‘best’ situation.

Here are a few ideas for making your Super Bowl party snacks penalty free!

H3 Spinach and Artichoke Dip (only 120 calories for ½ cup)

-  Make a veggie plate with H3’s tasty Green Goddess Dressing

Green Pea Guacamole and homemade Pita Chips

-  Cut a slice of our famous Lavosh Pizza – topped with fresh veggies and chicken (optional)

-  Score extra points with the delicious H3 Fudgy Brownies.

Challenge your friends to your own Super Bowl competition by holding a game of football during half-time.  Hold mini-challenges during the commercial breaks (well, the bad ones at least) and see who can do the most push-ups, jumping jacks or sit-ups during that time.  Keeping occupied while the game is on hold will help you snack less and move more.

Get your blue and white (or black and gold) attire ready and enjoy this Super Bowl Sunday night guilt – free.

Who are you cheering for this year?

A. The ‘Who Dat’ Saints

B. Peyton and his Colts

C. Neither…not a big football fan.

Dive In to 2010

New Pool and Jacuzzi Revealed

I hope everyone had a wonderful New Year’s and I’m confident that we all have the perseverance to reach our goals in 2010.  Our beautiful new environmentally friendly Pool and Jacuzzi was finished just before the beginning of the year.  I took a few minutes today to shoot a short video of what’s got everyone around here really excited.

Check it out…

Welcome 2010

Happy New Year

Happy New Year!

As you look for ways to improved your program in 2010, don’t underestimate the impact of making small changes. Dip and spearing salad dressing and sauces, using smaller plates and glasses (check out www.smallplatemovement.org ), taking a leisurely walk after a meal, doing a few squats, lunges or pushups during a commercial, or 5 minutes of deep breathing or meditation to break up a hectic day.

Changes like these might seem small and insignificant, but when integrated over time, can make a big difference.  100 calories saved here, 50 more burned there, add up. If you made some small changes that have helped you, leave a comment and share what is working for you.

Check out the website www.smallchange.gov for a other ideas.
